2020 Model Firmware Updates

I spent most of the morning trying to update the firmware on my 2020 Canadian Elantra (non-navigation model) to fix some bugs—particularly an issue where CarPlay connects to a black screen and requires reconnection. I used Update.hyundai.com, which shows my software version as eligible for an update, but my car won’t accept it.

When I reached out to update support, they informed me that models without navigation need to go through Hyundai Canada instead. However, Hyundai Canada says I need to visit a dealer, which would involve a service fee.

It’s frustrating that getting a system update is so difficult in this day and age. Does anyone have any advice or words of wisdom on how I can get my system updated without having to pay a dealer?

It’s frustrating when tech issues complicate things. Since Hyundai Canada directs you to a dealer, you might be able to escalate the issue through customer service or online forums for alternative solutions. Sometimes dealerships offer complimentary updates if you’re already there for a related service.

Here are some options for updating the firmware on your 2020 Elantra without visiting a dealer, though each comes with potential risks:

  1. Alternative Update Sources (Proceed with Caution):
  • Online Forums: Hyundai owner forums may offer guidance or resources for self-updating firmware. Exercise extreme caution when downloading software from unverified sources, as these files could be corrupted or malicious and potentially damage your car’s software.
  1. Contact a Different Hyundai Dealership:
  • Call Around: Reach out to various Hyundai dealerships in your area. Different dealerships may have different policies and might be willing to offer the update service at no charge or reduced cost.
  1. Wait for an Official Solution:
  • Monitor Hyundai Updates: Keep an eye on the Hyundai Canada website or contact them periodically to check if they introduce a more user-friendly update process for non-navigation models.

Additional Considerations:

  • Warranty: Performing a self-update might risk voiding your warranty if issues arise from the update.
  • Technical Knowledge: Software updates can be complex. If you’re not comfortable handling potential technical issues, it may be safer to leave the update to a professional.
