2024 Elantra SE using too much gas

I bought this car brand new 2 weeks ago, and I’ve already had to fill up 3-4 times. I noticed it’s burning through gas fast. For example, when I fill up, it shows 475 miles to empty, but I’m only getting about 375 miles out of it. Every time I drive about 5 miles, it takes 20 miles off the range, so that’s a 15-mile difference. I took two 193-mile trips, but it used about 270 miles of gas. Has anyone else had this issue? My 2017 Elantra was way better on gas. I think something might be wrong with the car, but there’s no check engine light or any codes. Should I take it to the dealership? Also, I noticed on the highway it dropped 10 miles in less than a minute, and this happened twice.

The DTE (distance to empty) is just an estimate. It’s trying to learn your driving habits. If you drive a lot on the highway, the estimate will improve. But if you sit in bad traffic, the estimate will drop.

To know for sure, find a gas station you like and start calculating your MPG the old way. That’ll give you a clearer picture of how much gas you’re really using.

Will it get better over time, or is it always going to burn this much gas? I’m seriously thinking about going to the dealership. I read that some 2024 Elantras have issues with the EGR valve, but mine isn’t affected according to my VIN. I’m just confused why it’s using so much gas compared to my 2017 model. If I drove 20 miles with that car, it took 20 miles off the tank, but this one is using 3x the amount of gas. I’m worried. I tried normal and smart mode, but there’s no difference. It’s not the smaller gas tank either. I actually get more in this tank, but it burns so much faster. I keep watching the dashboard, and it’s always showing more gas being used than it should. Thanks for the reply.

Cover up the DTE for now and calculate the real MPG manually. Then you’ll see if there’s actually a problem.

Just calculate it the old-fashioned way. Here’s how:

  1. Fill the tank up completely and reset the trip meter.

  2. Drive normally until the fuel light comes on. Don’t add fuel until then.

  3. When the fuel light comes on, fill the tank again. Take the miles on your trip meter and divide that by how much gas you added. That’s your MPG.

Thanks, that makes sense. But it feels like I’m constantly filling up. I just moved and put 1,400 miles on it in two weeks. I’m hoping it adjusts to my driving habits. I don’t drive aggressively, so I’m not sure why it’s burning so much fuel. I really miss my 2017 Elantra, it was so much better on gas. Whether I drive short or long distances, it seems like the fuel usage is way off. It feels like I’m using half a tank to get nowhere. The computer should have adapted to my driving by now, but I’ll keep an eye on it. If it doesn’t improve, I might trade it in for a Honda in a couple of years.

The gas tank is small, and if you use the AC a lot or accelerate hard, it won’t last as long. The DTE is probably assuming calm highway driving. The mileage sounds normal for what you’re describing.
