2025 Tucson Hybrid Limited - Smart Liftgate Issues

I purchased a 2025 Tucson Hybrid Limited a couple of weeks ago and so far I’m loving it—it has just over 200 miles on it. However, I’ve encountered an issue with the smart liftgate feature. I enabled it using the settings so that it would automatically open the liftgate after three seconds of me standing behind it. Initially, I thought this was a clever design, but it has become problematic. I’ve noticed that just walking past it with my phone in my pocket can trigger the liftgate to open, which is dangerous, especially with the garage door closed. So I’ve decided to disable the feature and I now understand why other manufacturers opt for a more explicit signal, like kicking a foot underneath the liftgate. Has anyone else experienced this?

Mine has a 6-second countdown and beeps 6 times. If you move out of range before the last beep, it doesn’t open. But sometimes it just doesn’t work at all.

I see. I might not have noticed the beeps. I’ll keep an eye on it. Thanks!

Plus, you can cancel it by pressing any button on the remote if you have it handy.

I disabled the auto open because it kept triggering when I was just walking past the trunk to the other side.

I disabled it too; it became more trouble than it was worth.

Yeah, I disabled it on my 2017 Tucson and my new 2025 as well. There are very few instances where I’ve actually needed to open it hands-free.

Thank you all for your responses! It would be great if Hyundai could address this in future models.

The first 3 beeps are quiet to indicate you’re close, and the last 3 beeps are louder, signaling the liftgate is about to open. It took me a while to get used to it, but now it’s not a big deal.

I disabled it as I find it to be the most useless feature on the vehicle.

Same here. I thought it was cool at first, but it quickly became annoying.

I had an X3 before and had to dance around to get it to open. I prefer this method; once you get used to it, it’s not hard to avoid accidental openings.

We have a 2023 model and it happens sometimes, but it hasn’t been a problem for us as we don’t have a garage. The beeps are helpful—it’s funny how we only realize their purpose once the liftgate starts to open. Haha!
