I currently own a 2020 Elantra with 35,000 trouble-free kilometers.
Previously, I had a 2010 Elantra that I drove for about 200,000 kilometers. I liked the 2010 model and found it to be fairly reliable, with no major issues. Here is a summary of the work I had done on the 2010 Elantra over the years, mostly due to normal wear and tear:
Replaced front and rear brake pads and rotors
Replaced torsion bars for the trunk lid twice
Replaced front door latch handles
Replaced one of the front wheel bearings
Replaced the battery
I was so satisfied with the vehicle that I bought a new 2020 model last year.
Some people, like Scotty Kilmer, believe Hyundai vehicles are of lower quality compared to Toyota and Honda. What’s your opinion?
I would like to hear from other Hyundai owners about the durability, quality, and reliability of Hyundai vehicles.
If there is a difference, it’s very small. Personally, I consider Toyotas to be the best. Honda, not so much anymore since they started using turbo engines and CVTs, and they have had issues with the air conditioning system, even on Acuras.
We have two Hyundais: a 2011 Elantra Touring and a 2017 Santa Fe XL, V6 AWD.
We bought the Touring new, and now it has 197,000 km on it.
Clutch replacement at ~118,000 km; the clutch pedal was very hard, but the disk was in good condition.
Brakes - first change at 91,000 km, second at 155,000 km. Last summer, I had to replace the rear pads because the right side cylinder was blocked. I bought the parts from rockauto.com for about $15 CAD.
Replaced some bulbs.
Replaced the front strut assemblies on both sides due to a leak. I found full assemblies and did it myself.
Replaced all four link bars for about $75.
Is it bad? Is it good? For me, as long as I don’t have any warning lights on the dashboard, I’m okay with it.
The XL still feels like new. We bought it in April 2019 and it now has 12,000 km.
I’ve owned a 2010 Elantra, which I drove for 200,000 kilometers with only minor wear-and-tear issues like replacing brake pads, rotors, torsion bars, door latch handles, a wheel bearing, and the battery. It was reliable enough that I bought a new 2020 Elantra last year, and so far, it’s been trouble-free at 35,000 kilometers. While some, like Scotty Kilmer, argue that Hyundai’s quality is inferior to Toyota and Honda, my personal experience has been positive. I believe Hyundai has made significant improvements over the years, and I’m curious to hear other owners’ thoughts on their durability, quality, and reliability.
Over the past ten years, Hyundai has significantly improved. They’re still not up to par with Honda or Toyota. The world’s greatest automakers and designers are Honda and Toyota.
HI there, Hyundai vehicles are generally competitive with Toyota and Honda in quality. Hyundai has improved its reliability and features significantly, though individual preferences and specific models might influence perceived quality.
Your experience with both the 2010 and 2020 Elantras reflects Hyundai’s notable progress in quality and reliability.
Hyundai’s Transformation:
Quality Focus: Hyundai has significantly improved build quality, reliability, and overall customer satisfaction in recent years.
Technological Advancements: Newer Hyundai models are equipped with advanced features and safety systems.
Warranty Coverage: Extended warranty periods indicate Hyundai’s confidence in their vehicles.
While Scotty Kilmer’s insights are valuable, it’s important to consider broader industry trends and individual experiences. Many automotive experts and consumer reports have acknowledged Hyundai’s advancements.
Factors Affecting Reliability:
Maintenance: Regular maintenance is essential for vehicle longevity. Following the recommended service schedule helps prevent problems.
Driving Habits: Aggressive driving or ignoring minor issues can lead to faster wear and tear.
Individual Variations: Reliability can vary even within the same model due to manufacturing differences or individual vehicle use.
Your positive experience with both Elantra models underscores Hyundai’s commitment to quality. Continue to monitor your 2020 model and address any issues promptly to maintain its reliability.
