Elantra 2018 MPI ticking… what’s going on?

I replaced the short block about 30k miles ago because of two rod bearing failures. Now, for the past 5k miles, it’s been ticking loudly. I can hear it with the hood closed even from 15 feet away. Anyone had this happen?

Sounds bad… :confused:

Tried uploading a video to show it, but this forum keeps acting up when I try.

This engine’s done for…

@Kelvin
Could be. I’ve got a Fusion with the infamous 910th engine. It’s got a coolant leak too, so I know the feeling.

Same here! I smell rubbing alcohol some days. Pretty sure it’s the heater core.

@Kelvin
I had a similar issue with my Ecoboost. Replaced the coolant but it came back. Now I just drive with the cap loose and it’s been fine for a year. Thinking of trying K Seal.

I’ve seen some videos about radiator additives for leaks. Definitely trying that if it gets worse. Not spending $2k to pull the dash at the dealer.

@Kelvin
Yeah, worth a shot. I barely drive these days, so fixing the engine isn’t a priority.

Why aren’t you driving? Are you in Ukraine or something? Sorry to hear that. And yeah, as long as you keep the oil and coolant topped up, it should last a while.

@Kelvin
That’s tough. Hope things get better for you.

Weird. The MPI Nu engines aren’t supposed to have the crankshaft machining issue. Strange you’d have bearing problems.

If you check the engine specs, it’s based on the same old design. They just changed to the Atkinson cycle to reduce low-RPM torque, which was supposed to help bearing life. Still a junk engine. I’ve driven plenty of brands at work, and this one’s been a disappointment.

@Kelvin
What are you trying to say? The MPI Nu isn’t part of the knock sensor campaign, only the GDI versions are.

I was talking about the 2.0 GDI that had the rod bearing recall.

@Kelvin
The MPI doesn’t have the rod bearing issue caused by crankshaft machining problems.

Hyundai’s ‘machining’ excuse is just a cover. Their engines are poorly made and can’t handle stress. Same story with Subaru—oil burning issues even in their Yamaha-made Grizzly ATV engine. My 2018 Elantra has a ridiculous list of defects, including a piston ring recall on the 2019-2020 models. They rushed these designs and skimped on quality.

@Kelvin
It’s not just an excuse. Hyundai and a whistleblower confirmed the machining issue—burrs in the crank oil galleys can break loose and block oil flow to a rod bearing. The MPI doesn’t use the same crankshaft machining process, so it’s unaffected. You’re free to think otherwise, but the facts don’t support it.

@Adam
I’ve had two rod bearing failures, and plenty of people have posted about the same. Someone needs to file a lawsuit for a recall.
