I recently bought a used 2023 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid SEL, and it has 8,250 miles on it. I keep getting random warnings when I hit potholes or drive near the lane markings, even though my hands are on the steering wheel. Interestingly, when I use adaptive steering control and take my hands off the wheel, I don’t get any warnings. Since I bought it certified pre-owned, should I get it checked by the dealer? Will I have to pay a $50 deductible? Thanks.
The steering wheel sensor detects movement but not pressure, so you need to make small movements to keep the system happy. With adaptive steering, you have a bit more leeway before it gives you a warning.

My wife is a new driver, and she gets that warning even with both hands on the wheel at ten and two. It’s funny sometimes.

You shouldn’t be holding the wheel at ten and two anyway. You should hold it at nine and three.

That’s really annoying. Can you turn that feature off?

Yes, you can turn off the assist, but if you’re using lane assists, it will still remind you to keep your hands on the wheel. The warning flashes red and after a while, the assist will turn off automatically. It’s meant to prevent letting the car drive itself, but it can be frustrating on straight roads.
This doesn’t bother me, but I find it funny because I have droopy eyes (obviously Asian). My driver attention warning keeps telling me to rest because it tries to detect my eye movements to see if I’m paying attention. My own car makes fun of me whenever I drive.

It’s ironic coming from an Asian car manufacturer. You’d expect them to test this out themselves.
I’ve noticed that my warning isn’t based on my hands being on the wheel, but rather how much input I give. I ended up turning lane keeping off when I was driving through Nebraska.
Try putting your hands on top of the wheel instead of the bottom. Just for a moment.
The wheel needs to sense resistance from you moving it to stay happy.

The warning appears when it doesn’t feel you moving the steering wheel, which is especially annoying on long, straight roads. Just a tiny movement to the left or right will make it go away.

My car goes nuts when I’m on a straight road. I’m not turning because there’s nowhere to turn!

In my 2020 Kona, the warning goes off if I’m tapping the steering wheel to the beat of the music.

First mistake was buying a Hyundai.

How dare anyone make fun of Hyundai after everything they’ve done! They’ve been innovating and competing in a tough market. All people do is criticize! Hyundai makes reliable, affordable cars for everyone! Leave them alone! Seriously, anyone who has a problem with Hyundai, you deal with me because they deserve respect.
