How bad is your insurance company penalizing you for owning a Hyundai?

Seems that many insurance companies are charging premiums on Hyundai’s these days.

How bad were you dinged for owning a Hyundai since the Kia Boys issue?

No penalty. I’m in Canada and all Hyundai’s have immobilizers here. They made a really poor business decision to not include them in the US.

The US made a poor decision by not requiring immobilizers, too. Combine that with zero consequences for stealing cars = children stealing cars for fake internet points.

@PatrickHyundai
It was an awful business decision on their part. Despite lower than average theft rates in the rural state I live in, the Hyundai dealership here rarely moves any cars from the lot anymore.

Also doesn’t Canada have a lower rate of theft in general?

@madisonwilson
Car theft is a big issue right now in Ontario. Mainly Toyotas, Lexus, Hondas, and Range Rovers are the biggest targets.

@madisonwilson
Usually yeah, IIRC the most stolen vehicles are CRVs and Rav4s here.

50% higher premium at the last renewal

Shop around! That might just be the insurance company raising rates as they’ve been doing for other vehicles too.

Insurance rates are based on zip code. If you live somewhere with a high volume of accidents or car thefts, your rate will go up a lot.

It will depend on your area and features on your car. Where we live, rates have not been raised on our ‘21 Tucson or ‘21 Santa Fe. Both push button start and have a factory security system with engine immobilization.

They refused to insure

I had a 2020 Elantra w/push button start, so it had an immobilizer. State Farm decided to raise my rates almost 80 bucks a month, even though it wasn’t an affected model. I traded that car in for a ‘23 Santa Cruz, a more expensive, well-equipped vehicle. My rates dropped almost $100 a month, making it cheaper than the Elantra. Kinda sad that they are raising rates even on the non-affected models.

@Lashun
This is exactly why I asked. A family member is having a $1600/yr increase for having an Elantra Hybrid, which is not affected. No accidents, tickets, or anything.

It’s because the thieves still attempt to steal them and cause a lot of damage.

Went from $130/month a year ago to $230/month. I was able to switch insurances for $175/month, but can’t find anything cheaper than that. Houston has horrific drivers, so I’m sure that plays a factor but some of these responses make me want to cry.

Zero penalty in Illinois.

Travelers

My rates have stayed the same, my 2015 Kia that I’ve owned since 2015 premiums haven’t raised, bought a Sonata in 2017, got totaled the premiums never raised, bought another Hyundai in June, premiums are normal.
