Is my Tucson Hybrid mileage normal or too low…?

I live in Northern New England, and winter has been pretty rough. I expected my 2025 Tucson Hybrid to get better than 26.2 mpg… 312 miles per tank seems low. The car has 1,885 miles on it. I drive carefully, no hard starts, and I watch the engine display. Anyone else experiencing this? Any tips?

I was in the same boat… I’m in the Midwest, and at first, I was only getting around 25 mpg. Now that it’s warming up and I’m close to 4,000 miles, I’m seeing about 35 mpg.

That’s good to hear. Warmer weather can’t come soon enough.

@James_Olambo
Same here with my 2022 hybrid. I was stuck at 28 mpg for a while, but now with over 20,000 miles, I’m getting 35+ consistently. I’d say it improved after the first 7,000 miles or so.

Same thing happened with mine. It gets better with time.

Tucsons don’t do great in the cold. I have a 2023 AWD model, and I struggle to hit 28 mpg when commuting in winter.

Glad to know I’m not alone here. Cold weather is brutal on mileage.

@James_Olambo
Yeah, but once it warms up, it’s a different story. In summer, I get 38-42 mpg. My lifetime average over 26,000 miles is 33.2, but before winter hit, I was at 33.6.

I’m near Chicago, and my commute is 8 miles at 30-40 mph. I get 35 mpg consistently. Highway mileage, though… not great.

I’ve got just over 5,000 miles and average between 32-35 mpg. If it’s above 30°F, I get the higher end. Even in single digits, I rarely drop below 30. I drive mostly on the highway with cruise control in eco mode. Keep my HVAC at 65, use heated seats and steering wheel, and usually have ‘driver only’ mode on since I’m alone most of the time.

@JakeHyundaiJourney
We’ve had a lot of days in the teens, so that could be the issue. I use EV mode, and I thought I was getting way better mileage based on the readout when I turn the car off. But when I actually did the math at the pump, my average was way lower than expected.

Still trying to fully understand how regenerative braking works.

Same here in Western NC. If it’s below 40°F, mileage takes a hit. Doesn’t seem to matter much whether it’s the 2022 SEL Convenience or the 2025 Limited Hybrid. Rolling hills and mild temps seem to be the sweet spot.

From what I understand, the Tucson Hybrid doesn’t work the same way as my old 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid. In that one, I could go full electric above 40 mph as long as I kept the RPM low. The Tucson Hybrid mostly just assists the gas engine. 26 mpg sounds about right for winter.

@Alex
Appreciate the insight.

No problem. Best efficiency seems to be between 45-55 mph. If you can stay under 55, you might see a difference.

That’s pretty much my usual range.

@James_Olambo
Nice. The 2025 Tucson Hybrid isn’t the most fuel-efficient hybrid out there. If it weren’t for the interior, I’d have gone with a RAV4 Hybrid or CR-V Hybrid.

I get between 28-32 mpg in Chicago winters, but that’s mostly highway. Let’s just say my speed is… a little closer to three digits than two.

Can’t believe you’re getting close to 30 on the highway. Mine drops a lot when I’m on the interstate.

Same deal here in the tri-state area. Are you using regenerative braking? I’m trying to get the hang of it, but I’m still stuck around 29 mpg in town. It goes into the 30s on the highway, though. Also, I think remote start idling might mess with the mileage calculations.
