Is White Growing On You?

At first, I wasn’t too keen on white. But it’s starting to grow on me. There’s something about the look, but I can’t quite figure out what it is.

I went with black instead. I actually wanted white, but black looks good. The problem is, it’s tough to keep it clean.

A block heater without snow on the ground? Hmm…

It can still get cold, even if there’s no snow.

Wait a second. What’s all the white stuff on the ground in the photo?

Haha, just a little snow. The block heater might not even be on. Some cars have a smart plug that only works when the temperature hits a certain level, even if it’s plugged in.

@oliviamartin
I’ve noticed that the coolant temp is around 45-50 degrees higher than the outside air after being plugged in for about 2.5 hours. So, it seems to be working. My GM had two types of block heater cords: one that’s temperature sensitive and one that isn’t.

What’s the deal with the wire?

That’s for the block heater.

That’s a Hyundai block heater. Here’s a link to more info: Hyundai Block Heater - Hyundai Elantra 011AM-00011 – Schlueter Hyundai

We don’t have this option in the EU. It’s probably only for colder places. We call it a ‘sparkplug.’ It’s used in diesel engines at start-up, but only until the engine warms up. I was referring to something else earlier.

I’m in Michigan, so I had to get it from a Canadian dealership.

Nice, hope you get many miles without issues.

Actually, since MVL is in Michigan, it’s ‘miles,’ not kilometers.

I’m from Montreal, Canada, an hour from Plattsburgh, NY. I have a 2021 Hyundai Elantra SE in white. I don’t use the engine heater, though. Never had it on my Japanese cars, either. Back in the day, all our GM cars had block heaters. People here don’t usually bother with them, especially in the city. I wonder if they even make a difference.

@Preme
With the heater on a timer for 2.5 hours, I see coolant temps 45-50 degrees warmer than the outside air. And yes, I live in a more rural area.

I have a red one. It’s a love/hate situation. I really needed one for college, and it was the only one available from multiple lots.

White is great. Much easier to maintain than black. My Subaru Outback is a pain to keep clean.

I had two black cars before. They looked amazing right after detailing, but they’d get dusty again quickly. White is way easier to keep clean. I used to park outside in Wisconsin and had block heaters. The best part was having heat sooner. Now, I park in a garage, and if it gets really cold, I use a trouble light with a 100-watt bulb. I’m not sure how long regular bulbs will last with LED lights becoming more common, though.
