Looking for volunteers for a testing group

I was curious what would happen if I covered the sensor with my thumb. It gave me a disabled message. I think I found a solution to that forward attention warning.

Different warnings pop up depending on how the sensor cannot see your eyes or face. Blocking its view with your hand at the top of the steering wheel has a different effect than blocking part of your face with your hand, or covering your eyes the same way or with glasses that block infrared light.

For everything I tried, I didn’t block the sensor like you did. Were you able to use smart cruise control with your thumb in that spot or covering it in some safer way while driving

Smart cruise still works

No it disables the cruise control

Did you try covering yours with your thumb like the person who posted? This is the first time I’ve heard the word disabled mentioned. There are different warning messages for various types of blockages and in my tests, I never saw the word disabled since I didn’t cover the sensor with my thumb.

The system can tell apart different kinds of issues. Blocking the sensor with your hand at the top of the steering wheel gives a different warning than blocking your face or eyes.

My guess is that by covering the sensor with their thumb, they blocked all returning infrared light and the system saw that as a failure, shutting down the sensor.

Or maybe the person who posted is wrong, but we won’t know until someone else tries it. I’m planning to give it a shot tonight.

Edit: I was wrong. The word disabled does show up in warnings.

Can you get the exact wording of the message? If not, I’ll try this later tonight or tomorrow.

@Joy
I’ll try tomorrow when I’m driving to get both

I covered my sensor as you did, and it warned me a couple of times before disabling smart cruise control. I can’t explain the difference.

I’m just glad someone else has the same low tire pressure as I do

You’re right! When I first got those messages, I thought they related to the sensors on the front bumper. I had to go to the dealership twice only for them to tell me the issue was my Mandalorian bobblehead shining rays on a sensor behind the rearview mirror. After I removed my Mandalorian, the problem persisted. Eventually, I Googled it and discovered it was my arm blocking that sensor while I was driving with one hand. I returned to the dealership, and they insisted it was impossible since my VIN didn’t include that feature. Then I showed it to them outside, and they claimed I must have had it installed later.

Are all Hyundai service people clueless, or did I just end up with a series of odd events

That level of unawareness is incredible. Like, why would I install something to annoy me and limit how I can hold the steering wheel

Exactly! I mean I DO have a wife

@MissNicklaus
Thumbs down. I’m telling your wife.

@MissNicklaus
I just realized I have a similar experience with my Kia. Carplay in my 2023 Kia Soul only works through USB. After about a year and a half, Carplay started disconnecting when the road is bumpy. Just driving down a normal road causes it to connect and disconnect repeatedly. I did the usual troubleshooting like checking the cable and socket. I can’t reproduce the problem when the car is still.

I took it to the dealership, and the Service Manager said that’s normal. He mentioned they could replace the USB ports, but it wouldn’t fix the issue. So I’m having them replace the USB ports and we’ll see what happens.

@Joy
Crazy stuff

@MissNicklaus
Wow

@MissNicklaus
Umm… lol

I tried turning on the cruise control and covered that sensor, then the cruise control got disabled and the car began to slow down, so I drove it back
