I’ve only done minimal maintenance besides constant oil changes; all work done are the front control arms, front axles, brakes, spark plugs, and tires. That’s it! Oil changes are done every 3,750 miles or so with full synthetic and either Hyundai OEM filters or K&N original engine and transmission. Hopefully, it goes longer! I’m hoping for at least 250k out of it.

…are you just lucky, or…
We all know the 2.4L is a weak(er) engine, rod bearing, oil consumption. I think treating it well goes a long way.
Like Audi’s 2.0T, notorious for burning oil, probably more so than Hyundai. Audi recommends 10k mile oil changes.
Why I’m in the oil is cheap camp, change every 6k km (4k miles) too, or 6 months.
Yes, synthetic oils are so good, but they cannot get rid of “soot”. Turbos/GDI makes it worse. That’s what sticks piston rings. Then oil burn, people run low/out of oil, takes out weak bearings. There’s your failure analysis; I see too many times on K&H forums.
@Douglas
Yeah, I try to keep up with the oil changes and topping it off when needed. If I take long trips, it burns around a quart for 1 hour or more driving. But otherwise, to and from work/college, it’s not super bad.
@C.cole3
I usually do the oil changes myself and get the oil and filter for $25 from Advance Auto.

If your engine is starting to burn oil, I recommend using the new Valvoline Restore and Protect synthetic oil! They specifically designed it to remove engine carbon buildup over time, especially carbon deposits that are causing the piston ring to get stuck and cause engine oil consumption.
@BobReuben
I actually use that oil, but thanks for the tip!
@BobReuben
This! And a PEA-containing additive for the fuel system. And occasional intake system cleaner.
@C.cole3
…I was going to mention yours might already burn some oil, but frequent oil changes can mask that problem too.
But my analysis stands, you are doing everything to keep it from running low on oil, I’d suggest 90% don’t. That’s when oil burn gets even worse. Too many run out of oil, bye bearings. Audi’s have electronic oil level monitors; that’s why they catastrophically fail less. Negligent owners get saved by technology.
I have a brand new 2023 Sorento; check oil level religiously regardless. I set a repeating reminder on my phone.
@Douglas
It’s good to do, even when I had older cars. You never know when something could fail, and a new engine isn’t cheap. I also have a 24 Elantra; it’s my partner’s car, and I even check that car’s oil.

I’ve seen the hype, I would try it, but so far I have not seen ‘proof’ of the claims. I am hoping for some independent YouTubers to quantitatively document improvements, oil change to oil change. Not just the manufacturers’ marketing.
Unless you know of any…?
@Douglas
I actually have been watching the reviews on YouTube by independent channels, and they were genuinely surprised about it working (they were skeptical initially), which is why I began to use it.
YouTube search Valvoline Restore and Protect.
@BobReuben
I’ll check again…
Edit…I had seen some before just missing the quantifiable part, especially as it relates to unsticking piston rings.
@Douglas
Valvoline Restore and Protect oil worked excellent for my 236,000 mile 2.4L, cleaning it up and stopping oil consumption. Noticed improvement halfway into the first oil change.

Good, thanks. Maybe the first real user to say so here. The YouTube vids for the last year felt like more clickbait…15 minutes to cut open a filter type stuff…“look it’s black”. Unsticking rings is another whole other imperative.
@Douglas
I used to get a small smoke cloud behind me when accelerating, and that stopped during the first oil change with Restore and Protect. Any consumption now has been so little that I don’t need to top up between changes anymore. Oil came out black as midnight during the first change as well, so it’s definitely dissolving crud.
@Matt
Good info.
Didn’t know 2017 Hyundai could hit high mileage. Do you see any oil consumption problem for your engine?
Hope you hit 300k!

It does consume oil unfortunately, but after a few oil changes around 3,750 and using Restore and Protect from Valvoline, I’ve noticed it burn slightly less. I usually check it once every week/2 weeks, and it usually only needs a top-off like a quarter quart.
I miss that full tank range.
