I need a car right now, and this is the only one I’ve found so far. Should I go for it, or keep looking?
You’ll probably have issues with oil consumption.

Is it because of the mileage, or is it something mechanical?

It’s an issue with this model in general, but high mileage can make it worse too.

I just got rid of a 2016 Sonata with the 2.4L engine because of this. It was burning 3 quarts of oil in about three weeks, and there were no leaks.
@HyundaiFanaticX
Yeah, it happens. I had a 2015 Sonata for about six months and 10,000 miles. No major issues, but I changed the oil regularly. I also had a 2018 Sonata Sport and had to stay on top of oil changes, or the oil light would come on.
It might have been sold because of the mileage and oil consumption issues. If you do decide to buy it, make sure to have a mechanic do a pre-purchase inspection, including a compression test, valve check for coking, and checking for debris in the oil.

@Douglas
Do you know if there are any settlements in Canada? I bought a certified 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe and had to replace the engine because of oil consumption.

There are some settlements in Canada, but I haven’t kept up with them. You’ll need to do some research or call Hyundai for more info. This link might help: https://www.mckenzielake.com/hyundai-kia-vehicle-defect-class-actions/
I’d pick a different car.
This engine is notorious for oil consumption. If you buy it, change the oil frequently and drive gently.
Run the VIN to see if it’s eligible for an engine replacement. If it has a solid service record, you might be able to get it replaced if it starts knocking before 150,000 miles or 15 years.
I’d avoid any car with the Theta II engine.
This car has a warranty extension. Look into the TSB—ENGINE WARRANTY EXTENSION (22-EM-001H).

And what happens after the warranty expires?

Right now, the warranty only covers connecting rod bearing failure. Anything else won’t be covered, and Hyundai might ask for maintenance records to make sure it wasn’t neglected.
@Leeland
Just sell the car.
Run away from this car. Mine has an oil consumption problem, and I’m waiting 3-6 months for a repair.

Is yours the same year? I just bought mine and am worried this could happen.
@Molly12
Mine is a 2020 with 56,000 miles. It needs a new engine, and I’ll never buy a Hyundai again.
