Not happy with the mileage on my 2024 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid Limited

I’ve had my Elantra Hybrid since May, and I’m really disappointed with the mileage. The advertised mileage is 50 MPG, and I’ve seen many reviews saying it can go up to 65 MPG or more. That’s why I spent extra money on this over the gas version. But I’m only getting about 38-42 MPG. I took it to the dealer to check the hybrid battery, but they found nothing wrong. They just told me that mileage can be lower due to weather, using AC, driving uphill, or going fast. I live in a flat area in the Boston suburbs and have only taken the car to Maine and New York, where there isn’t much uphill driving. I always drive in Eco mode, but I do go a bit faster on the highway at 80 MPH.

I’m posting here to see if anyone else with the same model has had similar mileage issues. Is there anything I can do to negotiate with the dealer or Hyundai since I’m not getting the promised 50 MPG?

Another annoying thing is that my car is only 4 months old, and I’ve had the battery die twice, so I had to reset the 12V battery. Both times, my dash cam was plugged in, which might have drained the battery. How can I avoid this? I want to keep using my dash cam without having to unplug it every night.

Don’t drive at 80mph

Exactly, it’s your speed and driving. My Ioniq can get over 55 mpg if I drive at 60mph. If I go to 65 mph, it drops to 50 mpg. Going 70 drops again to 45-48ish. I personally prefer 60mph, but my wife regularly goes 75 and averages about 45mpg at best. It’s slightly lower in winter.

Try not accelerating like you’re racing, see if that helps.

I get 50-55 mpg in my 2023 in the city and 35-45 on the highway going 60-80. So, ease up on the pedal, and you should be in good shape.

Thanks. It’s good to get this affirmation. Now I see that my driving habits affect my mileage.

There’s a reason why we cut off Prius drivers. To get the mileage they want, they have to drive a certain way.

Drive slowly and you’ll get there.

I’m curious how much lower than the advertised 100 MPG one would get on a Prius Prime with my driving habits.

Absolutely! If you live in the suburbs, you’re likely driving at slow speeds with a lot of stops and starts. This reduces gas mileage. On the highway, your mileage would be closer to the advertised figures.

I have a 23 Sonata Hybrid, and that’s not true. Braking charges the battery, and at slow city speeds, the car runs on the battery. I get 51.5 combined and stay under 75. On a trip from Bridgeport CT to Kansas, I got 53.6 at an average of 70mph. Slow starts and stops are the trick with the Hyundai hybrid.

I also have a 2023 Elantra hybrid and can confirm that I get the same mileage.

I think you might have those mixed up. Highway mileage is usually better than city.

Not with a hybrid. They do better in the city and regenerate the battery in those conditions. I had the Tucson hybrid, getting 35-40 in the city and 25-30 on the highway.

The EPA tests mileage at 47 mph for all cars, including Hyundais. Manufacturers optimize for that speed. If you drive around 65 instead of 80, you should see around 45-50 mpg.

Thanks. That’s an important piece of info that probably goes in the fine print and is easily missed.

I get 44 on the highway driving 70 in my 1.6 turbo Elantra.

Lift and coast. Use light long braking. Easy acceleration. Use cruise control. I have a 23 Sonata Hybrid Blue, advertised as 52 combined, and my average is 48 mpg. On my 13-mile commute, I get between 48 and 54 mpg.

Regarding your dash cam, try hardwiring it to the fuse panel to an accessory fuse that only powers on during operation. I haven’t had any problems with the battery. The only issue I have is that I don’t get a ‘sentry mode’ where the cam turns on from movement or a collision when parked.

@Puck
I’d say there’s a 99% chance it’s your driving habits and not the car. My 21 Hybrid gets around 40-45 mpg in winter and 50-55 in spring/summer.

Thanks. I think weather plays a role. In peak summer, it was 38-42, but now I’m seeing improvements to 42-45 as the weather gets milder. I’ll see how it performs in winter.

Hybrid mileage tends to drop in winter. My best mileage comes in spring and summer. I’ve heard the hybrid motor works harder in cold weather.
