2018 Hyundai Tucson with just over 63k miles. A piston shot out of the engine, pierced the oil pan, and caused complete engine failure. Does anyone know how much a full engine replacement is going to cost? Also, any idea why this happened?
I’m so thankful for the circles and arrows. I could have easily mistaken the piston hanging through the pan as an intentional design without them.

I’m sorry they’re the only pics the mechanic sent me
@Japheth
Pour one out for the homie my dude. 2018-2019 Tucson (2.0T or 2.4) is covered for rod bearing failure.

Came here to say this! I am just daring the 2.4L in my 2016 Sonata to pull this trick out of the hat…could happen any day now as I have 104k on the car haha
@HyundaiAnn
I have 202k miles on my 17 2.4L Sonata and I’m waiting to see what happens if it’ll last forever or when it’ll blow up

I had a 2011 Limited 2.0t Sonata until late Oct. Had 144,300 miles on it when it shuttered, lost power, kept driving it on the interstate. Long story short, 35% compression in Cylinder #4. Needed a car! Had to rent a car. Couldn’t afford to have an engine shop work on it, or needed a new engine plus would’ve had to keep renting a car at the ridiculous price after fees. Didn’t know how long the shop would have my car for, so had to go looking for a new car. Miss that Sonata but who knows what else would’ve happened. Also had a new thermostat housing replaced a year ago, & had no heat on the driver’s side for several years, too hard to get to that part without taking the dash apart, but other than that, ran good until that day in Oct. Now have payments again. Ugh.
@Japheth
We actually (even at the Ford dealer I work for) sometimes HAVE to do that pointless circling and pointing for warranty companies sadly. If you don’t have something pointed out VERY obviously there’s a possibility they’ll miss something that might look super obvious to us.
@Brielle
Extended warranty companies are so annoying to work with.
@Japheth
I wish I could have been there when the mechanic got the car up and saw that.

I just thought the car was hung like a horse.

I was thinking the same.

You need glasses. That’s a connecting rod, not a piston.
Judging by the dark oil staining on that connecting rod, I’m not surprised this happened at all. Change your oil, people.

Should be under powertrain warranty.
60K mile warranty I think. OP SAID they have 63K miles.

This is not part of the powertrain 10 yr 100k warranty? It’s part of the engine.
@Cynthia
You don’t get that 10yr/100k if you buy it used. It drops to 60k.

That is right. Unfortunate for OP.

OP never said they bought it used though… and in fact, in another comment said they are the original owner. So it should indeed be the 10yr/100k mile.

There’s an extended lifetime warranty for this issue: https://hyundaithetaenginesettlement.com/settlement-notice.html
