Avoid driving on US-82 at night… trust me.
That’s your suspension sticking out. Not totaled but it’s gonna cost you.

Yeah that’s your strut. Hopefully it’s just the strut that’s damaged.

If it’s just the strut, a few hundred bucks should cover it. If the shock tower is messed up, it’s gonna be pricey.

It’s the strut plate. Do both sides and check the struts. The nut probably fell off and the person who posted this ignored the bouncing and noise. $400 to $1000.
@TomHenry
That’s if nothing else got damaged when they hit the pothole. They’ll find out when they get an alignment.

And all the other worn-out parts they’ve been ignoring.
@TomHenry
Do people actually keep up with this stuff? Most just ignore it.

My Toyota Matrix lasted 15 years and over 200k km before needing struts. This is a 2017 car…
@jameshenderson
200k km is less than 125k miles. A 2017 car with that mileage isn’t uncommon in the US.
@TomHenry
Good call. Smart diagnosis.
The top hat on the strut failed. Not a huge deal.
Depending on where this happened on US-82, you might be able to get the local or state government to pay for the repairs.
First time seeing something like this.

I don’t think I was supposed to see this either.

Does insurance cover this in the US? In the Czech Republic, we have insurance for this kind of damage.
@GuyBolding
In the US, you can file a claim if you have the coverage. But after the deductible, insurance might not pay much, and your premiums could go up. It’s not great.

Sometimes you can get the city to pay for road damage. I hit a pothole, and the city covered the cost of new shocks and a bent wheel. Didn’t have to go through insurance.

I saw a Grand Cherokee with the same issue. It’s rare but it happens.
Call your insurance. That’s your strut coming through the strut tower. Best case, you need a new strut. Worst case, you need a new strut tower, which could total the car.
