Thinking of buying a Kona… are they reliable?

I’m looking for a new car, and the Kona has caught my eye. Which years are the most reliable?

So far, my 2020 Kona has been solid. No problems at all.

Same here.

My 2020 SE had the knock sensor go off, and they replaced the whole engine because of piston damage and metal in the oil. At least I got a brand-new engine for free. Just had to reply because your comment was funny.

Just picked up a 2020 Kona Ultimate as a certified pre-owned. Hoping it holds up as well as my old Elantra, which lasted 10 years before getting totaled in a rear-end crash.

Same.

In Portugal, the electric Kona is really popular for Uber drivers. I had a gas version before switching to electric, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Some pre-2021 electric models had a recall for gear issues, but it’s an easy fix.

@Brown
Doesn’t it go by a different name there?

Yeah, here it’s called the Kauai, but it’s basically the same car. A lot of them are imported anyway.

Makes sense, since it’s named after Hawaiian islands.

@Brown
They use them as taxis in Singapore too.

Got mine in 2019 and no issues so far. Just regular maintenance like oil and tires.

I have a 2024 gas model, bought late 2023. Drive 800-1000km a week, and no problems so far.

Same. We drive ours way less, but it’s already done two cross-country trips and survived NYC street parking for 9 months without any issues.

How’s the mileage? Looking at a 2024 AWD gas model, but the fuel efficiency rating doesn’t look great.

@Mary
Mine’s AWD. Averages 8-10L per 100km, mostly highway driving. Seems to do better in the city.

Love my 2020 base model.

If you’re getting a brand-new one, you’ll probably be looking at a 2025 model. If you’re going used, my 2021 Kona Hybrid has been running perfectly, no issues at all (knocks on wood).

Got a 2018 AWD 1.6T CPO. Super solid car, only issue was the cruise control button breaking, which seems to be a common problem.
