Why does my car keep warning me to hold the steering wheel

I got a used 2023 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid SEL and it has 8250 miles on it.

I keep getting annoying warnings when I hit potholes or drive near lane markings, even though my hands are always on the steering wheel. But when I use adaptive steering control and take my hands off the wheel, I don’t get any warnings.

I bought it certified preowned. Should I take it to the dealer? Will I have to pay a $50 deductible? Thanks.

The steering wheel sensor only picks up movement, not pressure. You have to make small movements to keep it happy. (2022 Kona and 2024 Kona)

The adaptive steering lets you have a bit more leeway before it warns you.

This is exactly it. My wife is a new driver (2022 Tucson) and she gets the warning with both hands on the wheel at 10 and 2. It makes me laugh sometimes.

That’s super annoying. Can you turn it off?

Yes, you can turn off the assist. But if you use the lane assists, it will still warn you to hold the wheel. The warning flashes red, and after a while, the assist turns off by itself. I guess it’s to remind you that the car isn’t fully autonomous, but it’s annoying on straight roads.

I’ve noticed that the warning isn’t based on my hands being on the wheel, it’s about how much input I give. I ended up turning off lane keeping while driving in Nebraska haha.

Try putting your hands on top of the wheel instead of the bottom. Just need to do it for a second.

The wheel needs to feel resistance by you moving it to stay satisfied.

The warning pops up when it doesn’t feel you moving the steering wheel. This is really annoying on long, straight roads. Just a tiny movement to the left or right will make it go away.

This doesn’t bother me much, but I find it funny because I have chinky eyes (obviously Asian), and my eyes droop. My Driver Attention Warning keeps telling me to take a rest since it’s trying to see if I’m paying attention. My own car calls me out while I drive, like come on man.

My car goes crazy when I drive on straight roads. I’m not even turning, there’s nowhere to turn! (2023 Santa Fe)

On my 2020 Kona, it goes off if I’m tapping the steering wheel to the beat of a song.

First mistake was buying a Hyundai.
