Why is the remote start only 10 minutes… anyone else feel this way?

I don’t understand why the remote start on my 2023 Elantra is only 10 minutes. It’s not enough to properly warm up the car. By the time I get to it, the engine is either turned off or not warm enough. What’s the point of even using it? Anyone know if there’s a way to make it longer, maybe with an aftermarket option?

For the engine, you only need a minute or so for the fluids to be ready. But if you’re talking about heating the cabin, driving will warm it up a lot faster. It’s the same with cooling the car in summer.

I just restart it after the first 10 minutes.

So you wait for it to shut off, then start it again?

Yep, that’s what I do.

That sounds like a hassle to do every time though.

@Alexy
I get it, but it’s either that or deal with it. Or, you know, consider a different car.

Yeah, 10 minutes is barely enough to start warming the car. Clearly, whoever set this time doesn’t deal with real cold weather.

It’s super frustrating. I’m thinking about getting an aftermarket remote start, but I’m a bit worried it could mess something up.

Here’s what I do: set a start profile where the fan is off, but the heated seats are on (if your car has them). Then create another profile with the fan and heat set to defrost and floor vents. When the first run ends after 10 minutes, start the second one. This lets the heater core warm up first before blowing air into the cabin.

Driving the car warms it up faster than idling for 10 minutes. My old Chevy Cruze gets warm faster than that with remote start, and I’m in the Toronto area. At least the car should be lukewarm by the time you get in.

It’s probably for environmental reasons. In Canada, the key fob remote start is even shorter—like 2 minutes.

That’s true, but it’s 10 minutes if you’re using the app.

@ElantraEnthusiast2
Right, with the app it’s 10 minutes. It’s likely set that way because of emissions rules.

Where are you located?

I’m in Ontario, and it gets just as cold here. I crank up the settings to high, set the blower to defrost and floor, and enable recirculation. It makes a big difference in how much heat you get in 10 minutes. Try it out.

@FAITH
That’s only an option with the app, not the key fob, and it’s still limited to 10 minutes.

So what’s the heat set to when you use the fob?

The settings on the fob are default and can’t be adjusted.
