You hear a lot of bad things about Hyundai, but here’s something good… My 2017 Elantra has 142,000 miles on it, still runs great, and doesn’t burn any oil. I’ve been doing oil changes every 3,000 miles since it was new.
Every 3,000 miles? That’s pretty often! Are you using full synthetic?

Most Hyundai engine problems are related to oil—either not enough oil or sludge buildup. The biggest factor is how often you change it. I do it myself, and it only costs $35, so I do it more frequently. I use full synthetic and an OEM filter.

Where do you get the oil?

$30 at Walmart for 5 quarts of Valvoline full synthetic.

FCP Euro is great for DIY oil changes! You only have to buy the oil once. If you send back your old oil, they’ll replace it under their lifetime warranty. I use Liqui Moly 0W-20 with a factory filter and change it every 4-5k miles. They also have other options if you need a different viscosity for your climate.
@HyundaiCruiser
Wait, they take back used oil? How does that work?

A lot of the issues with Hyundai engines were actually because of manufacturing defects in the cylinder walls.

I also switch up the oil type depending on the season. It gets really hot here in Florida, so I use a higher viscosity in the summer. The manual calls for 5W-20, but I use 5W-30 during the summer.

I do synthetic oil changes every 5,000 miles on my Sonata, and I’ve had no sludge buildup. It did start burning oil around 75k miles, and now it burns about a quart every 1,000 miles.

That’s unfortunate… Sometimes it just comes down to luck. If metal shavings aren’t cleaned out properly during manufacturing, they can clog the oil passages. Some engines are perfect, while others have issues from the start. Does your engine still run okay otherwise?
@nim_guru
Yeah, no major problems other than needing to change spark plugs more often because of the oil burning.

Mine is similar, but it started at 150k miles. I need to add about half a quart every 1,000 miles, but otherwise, it’s at 195,000 miles and still going.

I changed my oil every 4-5k miles with full synthetic on my '16, and the engine still died. No amount of maintenance can fix bad engineering. The motor seized at 67k miles with an immaculate maintenance record.

Try using Valvoline Restore and Protect.

Why wouldn’t you change it often? These engines are known for issues—7-10k mile oil change intervals are too long.

That’s how often I change mine from that time period too.
People on the Toyota forum are posting about reaching 500,000 miles, while here we’re celebrating 100,000 or 142,000. That says a lot about Hyundai compared to Toyota.

It’s like comparing apples to oranges… Someone driving a Toyota probably just wants something reliable to get from A to B and doesn’t care much about looks or features. Hyundai offers more tech and design at a lower price, which is why people choose it.
