2016 Hyundai Genesis sedan transmission quote

Took my 2016 Hyundai Genesis sedan to the dealer because it shifted hard in lower gears. It wasn’t until after they had the car for 5 hours that they decided to tell me that they don’t take apart/repair transmissions and would only be able to replace it for over $5000. Of course, their website shows they recommended a flush, but after calling them to question the price of the service, they informed me of the latter. It’s a straight 8 automatic; what do I do?

Take it somewhere else.

A flush service can screw up a transmission too. I agree with ARK. Take it somewhere else.

This requires some more context.

A properly maintained transmission with regular changes is GOOD. However, that’s where the issue lies, in regular maintenance. Over the transmission’s lifetime, parts will wear, leaving behind bits of metal shavings and whatnot from wear and tear. This tends to exacerbate itself, as more of this ‘grit’ gets left in the transmission; it speeds up the wear and tear. Routine flushes help clean that all out. However, if you let it go on long enough, that grit ends up being necessary for friction, or else your transmission starts slipping.

@Kelvin
You said ‘flushes’, I think you meant drain and fill. If you flush your transmission 3 times before hitting 100k, you’re probably going to blow out your own system.

Def drain and fill! Costs about $250 from my dealership.

@Tracy
I think my independent shop is somewhere between $200 and $250 for a drain and fill. Every mechanic I’ve talked to says a flush is too harmful to your transmission. Besides, you could replace the tranny for what they are trying to charge you. I would just leave and use an independent shop that you get recommendations on.

@Donna
I got my drain and fill for 105.

@Tracy
I’m not sure if I can do that since it’s an enclosed transmission.

You can; it’s just a pain in the ass. The fill plug is on the side like a differential, so you have to pump it in. Gotta have a way to fill back up if it leaks.

Like Red said, it’s a PITA. It’s not ‘sealed’; I don’t know why manufacturers say that. If you look at most of them, there’s a drain plug and a fill plug, which is actually just a level/overflow hole. You drain it out and fill it up until it leaks out. Great design, right?

Ah, gotcha. Seems to have been some mixing up of terminology on my side, thanks!

There’s a lot of mixed-up terminology, including some made up by the sales team. Not saying flushes are made up, lol.

Still, though, the price of that flush seems insane!

They could replace the transmission for that price. Do not go there.

That’s actually the replacement price; their computer is being weird.

Don’t flush; just drain and fill.

Bring it to a transmission shop and have them do a transmission fluid drain and fill. Do not flush!

'16 Genesis sedan utilizes Hyundai’s variant of ZF8, which is very common. Additionally, flush is never a recommended service for any transmission without service history. Take it to another shop.

I got my transmission replaced for 5500.

My Hyundai has a sealed transmission. Basically, when it needs servicing, it will need to be rebuilt/replaced.

If you’re going to spend that much, it’d be much better to get a remanned one or a crate. Flushing transmissions speeds up the death after it’s gone a long period without one.
