2018 Hyundai Elantra Battery Replacement?

Hi everyone! I’m new here and just bought a used 2018 Elantra BASE model with a 2.0L 4-cylinder engine. The battery is the original from 2018, so I’m planning to replace it.

It’s an AGM battery, but when I went to Costco, they sold me a battery that didn’t fit—even though they ran the model in their system. They gave me an H6 AGM battery, which turned out to be way too big.

Could anyone confirm which battery model I actually need? I have some pictures of the original battery, but I’m still learning and am not totally sure what to look for in terms of model numbers. Tyia…

If the H6 is too large then it’s an H5. Hyundai/Kia are notorious for having multiple battery sizes for the same car just based on trim level (I assume because I haven’t been able to figure out what causes them to change the battery size when the engine stays the same).

@Dylan
Greatly appreciated for your input, I believe it may be a H5 AGM as well.

@Dylan
More electronics = more draw = need bigger battery.

Funny enough I also have an 18 Elantra and had my battery replaced recently from Costco. What I got was a:

  • H6-AGM
  • 760/120/70 cold crank amps/reserve capacity/amp hours respectively

I believe the part # is 1346545 from Energizer. Keep in mind I got a new battery under warranty as previously mine leaked from the terminals (yes, seriously) so keep that in mind but the #'s will be correct.

That’s strange because I bought the exact one and took it for replacement. Mechanic couldn’t even fit this H6 battery into the car.

There is a semi-hidden plate that stops the battery from being put in unless it’s loosened, as it holds the battery down. Maybe that’s what’s causing it? It’s on the front of the floor the battery sits on (facing the front of the car).

@Frankie
Good to know, I’ll double-check with the dealer for model number just in case. Appreciate it!

I just did this battery replacement on my 2018 Elantra GT sport. It called for a H5 AGM battery. After removing the OEM battery I found out that it’s a flooded cell battery but, I still put in the better AGM model. Bob is correct, when you pull out the battery there is a single bolt with a plastic retainer that will lock the battery down. It may have dropped back in place not allowing the battery to fit. I will add the cable length is very tight but it’s manageable!

Thank you so much for letting me know, appreciate your guidance!

When you say the new battery didn’t fit what do you mean specifically? Too tall so that the cables wouldn’t reach? Besides the H6 specification it looks like there is a variety of cold crank amps (CCA) and maybe that affects the height of the battery. If someone doesn’t jump in with more detailed help I’d probably just take it to a local mechanic as they may need to extend the battery cables to put anything aftermarket in. You could also take it to the dealership too of course.

My Forte battery looks identical to your photo and my replacement was a H5 AGM.

Thanks for the reply, I think it might be H5 AGM as well now. Appreciate your help.

94R/H7 is what I am finding.

That is definitely not an H7. H7 is even bigger than H6.

If an H6 is too big it’s probably an H5.

It’s an H6A battery. (Group size 48) You also have to make sure it’s an AGM, not a Flooded Battery.

00275-20000 is the OEM replacement battery.

9848 if you wanted one from NAPA.

999M1-NBH6A if you wanted a Nissan one.

48PLT if you wanted an O’Reilly’s one.

The insulator won’t fit on a new battery. They’re specifically designed for the Factory Battery.

But as someone said earlier, there is a battery hold down that you will need to install. Otherwise your battery will move around while driving and it’s not good.
