2021 Elantra oil change costs $150 CAD plus tax... Is this normal or overpriced? How much does that special filter actually cost?

Just had an oil change for my 2021 Elantra, and the total came to $150 CAD plus tax. Is this typical, or am I being charged too much? Also, how much does that special filter add to the cost?

You can do it yourself for around $30 (USD). The filter costs about $5, and the oil is around $25.

Don’t go to the dealership. Try another place to get it done, you’ll likely pay less.

It wasn’t the dealer, but I see what you mean.

I paid around $120 CAD plus taxes at the dealership for my oil change.

Even the quick lube spots around here charge $119 for synthetic oil changes.

Shop around. One dealership near me charges $130 USD for an oil change, but another one just a few miles away charges $60 and even washes the car. It’s a great deal, and the service is logged in the CarFax.

@Michael
They probably didn’t put the correct oil in it. But if it’s recorded, it’s fine, I guess. Hope you’re leasing the car.

I just realised they likely used 5w-20 instead of 0w-20, and I’m leasing, so it doesn’t matter too much. I always check the dipstick after an oil change, and the car’s mileage improved after the change.

@Michael
0w-20 is synthetic oil, and 5w-20 is probably cheaper. Since you’re leasing, it shouldn’t matter. You did your oil changes, so you’re fine.

I paid $120 for an oil change at a pop and mom store for my 21 Sonata with synthetic oil.

For these kinds of prices, you’re better off going to a quick lube place.

Don’t go back there. You were treated like someone who doesn’t know better. My Elantra oil change is only $65 at the quick lube.

That’s too much. Find a different place, or if you can, just do it yourself.

You’re mostly paying for labor. If you want to save money, avoid the dealer.

Try Econolube. I got tires swapped and a full synthetic oil change for $104 CAD with taxes.

I just had my 2016 Sonata hybrid done at the dealer, and it cost me $85 USD.

It’s so easy to do it yourself on these cars. You can get oil for under $30 and a filter for $5. Takes 30 minutes max and saves so much money in the long run.

Shop around. A couple of dealerships near me offer full synthetic oil changes for $79.99, and there’s a local place that always has deals for $69.99.
