2022 Elantra SEL... Am I getting the real MPG? Is the only way to check it by filling up and doing the math myself? I was on a state road, not a highway with stoplights or anything

I’ve been checking the mileage on my 2022 Elantra SEL, but the numbers don’t seem to match up with what I expected. I was driving on a state road and not a busy highway like 95. I noticed the car doesn’t really show the actual miles per gallon, so I’m wondering if the only way to know for sure is by filling up the tank and doing the math myself. Is this how everyone checks their MPG, or is there another way I’m missing?

33 mpg is likely what you’re seeing on that tank. The average on the trip is what you’ve been getting

I have a 2017 Elantra, and it’s usually 2-3 mpg lower than what the computer says. Those numbers aren’t always accurate

@Amanda
Are you mostly driving on freeways or in cities? Or both?

90% freeway, Monday through Friday

I have the same car, and I just care about getting 33 mpg. My average is usually around 50 mpg during the workweek with 300 miles of mostly freeway driving. I always keep it in eco mode though

50 mpg? Really?

@Dylan
I get the best mileage with good quality gas and keeping it in smart mode. I filled up my 2022 SEL at an Exxon and averaged 52 mpg on the way home, which is about 35 miles at 80 mph

That’s impressive. Those numbers are closer to what you’d expect from a hybrid. I almost bought one, but this car’s 200 ft-lb torque really impressed me. It’s my first car with good fuel efficiency.

Do you let the car shift itself when you’re on the highway at 80 mph?

@Dylan
I almost never use manual mode. On the highway, I follow a semi-truck going at least 80 mph and set my cruise control behind them. That’s how I get mpg as high as 62 with drafting.

You’re getting 80 mpg on back roads at that speed?

@Dylan
Yeah, 80 mph and still getting between 50-55 mpg between 60 mph and 80 mph.

By good quality gas, you don’t mean higher octane, right? I’ve heard that’s a total scam.

@Dylan
No, I mean more reliable brands like Shell, Chevron, or Exxon. I always use Exxon. I’ve tried Circle K, but it’s just not as good for mileage, even when driving conservatively. At best, I get around 44 mpg with them.

@Leeland
Yeah, it resets after 4 hours of driving.

How much off is the MPG on the screen compared to what you actually get? I’ve noticed that in my N-line, it’s about 10-15% higher on the screen. Does it really matter to you though? Are you spending that much on gas?

@Freddie231
I could guess, but I still wouldn’t know if I’m spending enough on gas to care. That’s not really my main question. I really want to figure out what I’m getting for MPG on freeways, state highways, and city driving.
