That was a Jeep Grand Cherokee, not a Hyundai.

If your car engages the parking brake automatically, it’s probably detecting even slight slopes and activating it for safety. Cars can roll away even on flat ground under the right circumstances. Nissan and Ford had recalls for similar issues a while back.
Unfortunately, you can’t turn this feature off. On my car, though, I can just shift into drive or reverse while the brake is on—it disengages automatically.
