Anyone else annoyed by auto parking brakes?

This really gets on my nerves. I have a gate across my driveway, so I have to stop, get out, and open it. Even though my driveway has a slight incline, the auto parking brake activates most of the time. When I get back in the car, I’m stuck putting my seatbelt on again just to switch to drive and pull into the garage. Is there any way to turn this off?

Honestly, having to open the gate would bother me more.

If it’s such a problem and you have a gate, why not get an automatic one? If this is your biggest annoyance, I’ll gladly switch lives with you.

You don’t need to wear your seatbelt for this. Just press the brake pedal and hold down the parking brake button to disengage it. Simple enough.

As far as I know, there isn’t a button. My car just engages the parking brake whenever it feels like it’s needed.

There’s definitely a button. What model of Hyundai do you have?

@PatrickHyundai
Check this video: Sonata Electronic Parking Brake. It’s for a 2024 model, but it works the same on 2020-2023 models.

Every car has a parking brake button. It’s also used as the emergency brake. Manufacturers can’t sell cars without one.

The transmission isn’t a parking brake. It’s better not to rely on it to hold the car’s weight, even on flat ground. I always use the brake—it’s a habit from years of driving manual.

Just get a driveway gate that opens with a remote. Even my old BMW had this feature. Cars roll on small inclines—it’s a safety thing.

Exactly. Some people don’t realise how necessary this is. Even on flat ground, cars can roll if bumped or something goes wrong. Remember those Ford and Nissan recalls a few years ago?

Why not clip the seatbelt back in when you step out to open the gate?

I have a handbrake, so it’s not a problem for me.

Good idea, thanks.

Oh sure, because that’s less effort than pressing a button. Lol.

Why not leave it in park?

I do. The problem is, after opening the gate and getting back in, I have to buckle up again before I can switch gears and pull into the garage.

@PatrickHyundai
That’s odd. Are you switching gears before closing the door? I know some cars engage the brake automatically when the door is open, even if someone’s in the driver’s seat.

@PatrickHyundai
So your car won’t let you shift gears until you’ve buckled up?

@PatrickHyundai
If you close the door before putting it into drive, the parking brake shouldn’t engage.

It’s probably a liability thing. A famous actor got crushed by a car years ago, and this could be Hyundai’s way of preventing similar accidents.
