I mentioned before i cant afford rav4s, landcruisers, pilots. Most people mentioned mazda and i really like them but i want to know about hyundai. I used to drive a 2003 santa fe at 300000 miles. Was horrible obviously but im hoping they are great well under those miles.
Hyundai is currently viewed as having unpredictable reliability and build quality. While it may not be as bad as it seems, it makes it difficult to recommend the brand since reports vary widely. They are definitely considered a lower tier compared to Toyota and Honda, and you’ll often find many comments in this subreddit expressing deep frustration and strong dislike for them.
Hyundai and Kia vehicles made in Korea are generally decent, but the ones produced in America tend to have the most complaints.
They might be reasonably good now, but if the prices are similar or within a few thousand dollars, I would always choose Toyota or Mazda. You couldn’t convince me to consider a Tucson over a CX-5 or RAV4 unless the Tucson were priced $7k to $10k lower, and even then, I’d still hesitate.
Anecdotally, Hyundai and Kia’s customer service at dealerships isn’t very good either. Having a 100,000-mile warranty is great, but receiving poor treatment when seeking service can be quite frustrating.
I would be cautious about any Hyundai or Kia with a four-cylinder Theta II engine. The company has set aside billions of dollars to replace these engines.
We have a 2003 Highlander that still runs well and has had very few issues as it nears 190,000 miles. You don’t see many Hyundais or Kias that are 20 years old on the road.
