Barely over 2 years and the steering wheel is peeling. Now 2 1/2 years in, and it looks like this now. The case manager won’t do anything from Hyundai. Guess this will be my last one ever.
There’s a big difference if it’s 2 1/2 years old with 20k miles vs. 2 1/2 years old with 300k. They will never warranty a wear item. It’s like asking them to warranty the seat because you sat in it.
Get a Costco microfiber towel, wet it with warm mildly soapy water, wring it out hard, and scrub your wheel clean. Cut your nails and wash your hands more often; you could be introducing corrosive chemicals or sweat from your hands into the steering wheel. You can see the buildup in the crevices of the leather. Show us the raw damage after cleaning it thoroughly, and any additional material that comes off onto the microfiber towel.
Then, with it cleaned, approach a different local dealer and say the steering wheel is disintegrating after barely driving it around and that you were merely dusting your car when you found out. I’ve seen 400,000-mile Lexuses and beater Silverados with cleaner steering wheels.

Skin cheese is a term I didn’t need to hear but it does describe it well.

It’s similar to bellybutton mustard.

When someone coughs up phlegm I call it lung butter. My wife isn’t a fan of the name, lol.

You could use the term smegma if you want.

I can guarantee you this is from sweat. I have a condition called hyperhidrosis. I bought a cheap desk, nice desk, but cheap; within 6 months, the spot where my right hand went to use the mouse went from walnut brown to white from the sweat in my palm; it literally ate through the coating on the top of the desk, then ate through the dye they used.
Have you tried cleaning it?
Lol bro, just look at the steering column!? It’s covered in hair, dust, and skin fragments. Have you ever cleaned the interior?
I’ve had mine for 2 years and it doesn’t have any peeling. Are you parking outside a lot?
Is it peeling, or has grime from your hands built up on the surface enough to now be flaking off? This doesn’t look like peeling.
Do you happen to smoke in your car? Just curious.
It looks dirty, tbh. I had great success using Lysol disinfectant wipes to clean my wheel. It didn’t lift any of the finish like hand sanitizer does. Brand new looking after a 2-minute wipe down.
That’s dirt. You can tell filthy hands touch the steering wheel by the left side control for the lights; it also has the same grime level.
Why are all the worn-out areas on the dashboard side, not on the driver side? Is there a big difference between your palms and nails? You might either paint it or wrap it.
Clean your hands. Go to a detail car wash regularly and have the interior cleaned. Do you think that should also be covered by the manufacturer’s warranty?
OMG sorry, this is very disgusting. Keep a container of auto wipes in a small plastic bin on the passenger floor. Wipe the inside dash, wheel, etc., 2x a week. Takes 5 minutes. Sorry you are getting bashed, but if the wheel was clean, you wouldn’t notice the wear and tear.
If I could add another picture, then this would make a lot more sense. The front of the steering wheel is perfect and almost looks brand new. I drive touching the bottom of the wheel 80% of the time, not the top. The leather is not holding up. This picture is right after the dealer also wiped the wheel. The outside rubber around the windows is also turning white and crystallizing.
I have made some pretty torn-up steering wheels look great with some black shoe polish.
