I’m experiencing problems with my sonata that I bought used about a month ago with 36k miles. Almost every morning, when I try to start my car, the engine won’t turn on. Everything else in the car, like the lights, radio, and dashboard lights, works fine, but the engine doesn’t start until I try for about 5 to 10 times. It takes even longer when it’s really cold outside, which it is right now in the northeast US. I had my battery checked at a local auto parts store, and they said it’s perfectly fine. Once the engine finally starts, it runs well for the rest of the day until I leave it overnight. This isn’t a push-start model, so if anyone has suggestions, I would appreciate it.
You might want to get your battery tested again at a different auto parts place like O’Reilly’s.
I have a similar issue with my 2015 Sonata. I even bought a new battery and checked the starter relay, which was fine too. What works for me is when I turn the key to start, I press the gas, and it starts. You can give that a try. Also, the starter could be failing, which is next on my list to check.
If it requires 5 to 10 tries before starting, it’s unlikely the battery is the problem. The 2018 Sonatas have known starter issues. I just replaced my third starter this year.
Sounds like it could be a battery issue.
It sounds like it could be your battery.

I had it checked and was told that it was fine.

When it doesn’t start, what happens if you jump start it?
@AccentAddict
It’s never gotten to the point where I’ve had to jump it, so I’ve never tried.
Is your battery the original one? If so, you should at least have it load tested. Personally, I’d replace it if it’s original. How’s your air filter? If it’s dirty, replace it. Original spark plugs? It might be time to swap them out. Are you using Top Tier gas? You could pour in a bottle of TECHRON Fuel System Cleaner to help clean your fuel injectors. And since it’s Winter, using clean FULL SYNTHETIC Oil of the right weight can help with cold starts. Let us know what you find out! Good luck!
There’s a technical service bulletin for the in-tank fuel filter. It can bleed the fuel pressure down, which causes starting problems.
