How do I switch to manual gears?

@pascar
The new Kona uses a Mercedes-like shifter that’s where wiper controls would normally be on a car.

Simple. Eco (or normal, depends on the model year or country) paddles are for recuperation. Just switch to sport mode. In sport, paddles are for switching gear. And yes, you need to read the manual!

Comment based on the assumption that we are speaking about a hybrid.

@Taylor
Amazing thanks, I clearly missed that in the manual! Yes, it is the hybrid model, I’ll give that a go.

Yes, this is the right answer for a hybrid - I have an Ioniq hybrid. To move into Sport mode (if you or anyone else reading doesn’t know), when the gear selector is in Drive, you move the stick horizontally towards you (in a RHD anyway - I assume it’s the same on the other side). As soon as you tap one of the flappy paddles, you’re in manual gear change until you take it back out of Sport!

Ok OP which post do you dare to try first thinking, “Are they setting me up, will it mess my gearbox up…”
The best one to trust is in your handbook…

Go back to YouTube search ‘How to use paddle shifters Hyundai’ and watch a generic video. Plus is uplift, minus is downshift; the car will not stall out or over-rev itself so damage cannot be done to the engine or transmission.

While you are driving, you are at a specific gear number (e.g., dash shows D5 - means you are in Drive and using gear 5). When you hit one of the shifters at your steering wheel, the car will switch to manual gear selection. It will stay in manual mode, and you will need to shift using the steering wheel shifters until you switch back to automatic mode again by pressing the D button on your automatic gear shifter. It may also auto-switch if you come to a complete stop, not sure about this tho.

@MegWhitgal
My '21 will auto switch whenever it passes certain tolerance thresholds without driver input; it’s not meant to drive fully manual. The intention is to finely control acceleration during overtakes or downhill approach/slowdowns, but beyond that, unless I am riding the paddles, usually it falls back to auto.

Put it in sport mode.

You just press the shift up or shift down, and to switch back to auto, press and hold shift up till you hear the chime and see the D on the dash.

I don’t use the paddles in my Mustang GT as the transmission knows where it needs to be on its own. But, that’s a HYUNDAI! Just click down one at highway speed (you won’t kill it) and watch the tach. You’ll see it jump up a little as you go from 8th to 7th. To switch back, just hit the ‘D’ button again or go all the way back up and leave it for a few seconds and it’ll revert back. I believe the car is smart enough not to grenade itself if you go to ‘low’. The only time I’d use it is maybe going down a long, steep grade, or if I was towing something maybe, but I wouldn’t tow in a Hyundai anyhow. I’m not in Europe.

Brightness control for your windshield… yes… I am an ass…
Just play with them and see what changes on the dash and listen to the engine. Wish I had one like that; I have the console one and use it in heavy traffic too. I always forget after a red light and the engine screams at me reminding me I am on manual (2010 Hyundai Sonata) when the music is too loud. So accustomed to automatic.

Interesting. I never tried manual yet.

Push those flippy flap things you were so kind to circle. If you’ve never driven a stick shift though, I’d recommend leaving them alone.

3 ways to do this: Hold plus paddle for a few seconds or come to a complete stop it will switch to drive or switch to drive via control stalk.

I miss the clutch and a proper shifter… No confusion on how to operate.

2 ways:

  1. Tapping either of the paddles.

  2. Moving your shift knob to the left to set it in manual mode.

In sport mode, it’s gear shifter. In eco mode, it’s the regenerative braking intensity adjuster.

Just put in the clutch and put it in 1st; not that hard.

Open your manual to the ‘How To Read’ section and learn how to read.
