My key fob fell off somewhere between getting in the car to leave the gas station and arriving at my friends house. Is there a way I can start my car with the just the key?

They will have the tools and expertise to unlock your car and potentially even replace your key fob on the spot.

If your car starts with a key, you can use only the key.
A locksmith can make one too.

Yes, you should still be able to start your car.
Look for a small slot near the steering column or somewhere on the dashboard where you can insert the key. Once you find it, insert the key and turn the ignition like you normally would.
That should start your car without needing the key fob.
