Ignition switch lock cylinder removal

The key broke off in the lock, therefore I wanted to remove the cylinder and have a locksmith extract the broken piece of the key.
The cylinder may be removed easily and quickly.
Three screws (#1 Phillips) on the bottom of the shroud, and it is off.
To remove the lighting ring from around the lock, use one additional screw (also #1 Phillips). Let it hang from the wire.
Turn the lock to the ACC position.
Depress the small silver button located at the bottom of the lock, right behind the previously removed lighting ring.
Pull out the cylinder.

It is that simple.

It took the locksmith 3/4 of an hour to remove the shattered component. Still, $30 was less than the $200 Hyundai quoted for a new cylinder.

  1. Insert the key into the old cylinder and turn it to the accessory position.
  2. Use a small screwdriver to press the anti-rotation button, allowing the cylinder to turn beyond its usual position.
  3. Rotate the cylinder until the retaining tab and slot align.
  4. Slide the cylinder out of the case.

You can easily remove the ignition cylinder yourself by removing a few screws and depressing a small button. This allows a locksmith to extract a broken key without replacing the entire cylinder, saving you money compared to what the dealership quoted.
