@Zack
Very nice! I got my 2017 Sonata back 8 days ago with a new engine for free at 135k miles. I changed the oil today at around 750 miles since I drive a lot. Changing the oil every 500 to 2000 miles seems excessive. Hyundai recommends following normal oil change guidelines, but mechanics I know suggest changing it at 500-1000 miles once, then going back to the normal frequency, which I plan to do every 5000. A lot of online searches also say to change oil after 500 miles on a newly built engine and then go back to regular intervals.
@RooneyOnWheels
Thanks for the info! I had read you should change it often after a rebuild. I used to have a 2016 Sonata as a company car and really liked it.

Make sure to check if your AC works well. If it doesn’t, let me know, and I can help.

Yeah, it’s working fine. I checked it in the lot.

Good to hear!
Congrats on getting a free replacement! I hope I get the same luck with my 2016 when the time comes. It might be worth the extra hour to drive to Yakima.

Thanks a lot! Yes, I would definitely make the extra trip. They were fantastic.
How did you get a free engine with that many miles? I thought they only covered up to 100,000 miles.

They said as long as the top end was clean and I had records of full synthetic oil changes, it had a lifetime warranty.
@Zack
That’s amazing! What was wrong with it originally? I wonder if my Santa Fe in Canada would get the same coverage.

It really is something I’ve never experienced with a car before. I bought it used as the second owner in 2022 from Doug’s Hyundai with 119k miles. It had full service records, and I changed the oil and filter every 5k miles with full synthetic. At 197k miles, my daughter was driving it home from a 150-mile round trip, and it started running rough and then died when she pulled off the road to a park. I checked it out and tried to start it, but it wouldn’t start. I had it towed to the nearest dealership, which was in Yakima. They had to wait 3 weeks for the new engine, but once it arrived, it took them about 5 working days to install it.
@Zack
Stunning. Simply stunning.

My local dealer told me that if anything happens, just bring it in, and they’ll work with Hyundai to get the engine replaced. He said they usually approve it even if it’s out of warranty.
You should also have them replace your intake manifold because the engine was seized. If there’s metal in the intake manifold, it could cause the new engine to fail, and Hyundai may require the dealer to cover the second replacement. TSB 23-EM-002H guidelines state that the intake manifold must be replaced if the engine was seized. I suggest you ask them to check that for both your and their sake.
@Hart
I will definitely ask them about that, thank you!
My Sonata is a nightmare with all sorts of codes and excessive oil consumption. I’m hesitant about getting an engine replacement because apparently, the new engines are refurbished and might fail.

If the new engine fails, they’ll replace it too.
@MaryJane
They told me once you get an engine replacement, that’s it, so I’m worried. Do you know if they will replace the turbo too?
