Need help with oil consumption… what should I check?

Hey everyone, hope you’re all doing well.

I just got a 2014 Hyundai Elantra GT Hatchback, and it’s got about 109k miles on it. I didn’t get a warranty with it, and now I’m noticing it’s eating a lot of oil, like a quart a week! I changed the PCV valve two weeks ago, but I just checked the oil again, and 2 quarts are already gone.

I’ve been told there might be some white smoke from the exhaust, but I haven’t seen anything crazy. There are no leaks under the car, so I’m guessing I’m burning it. The exhaust pipe isn’t oily either.

What else should I check out? I’m trying to avoid taking it to a mechanic and getting a huge bill for something I might be able to fix myself. Any ideas or tips would be appreciated. Thanks!

Just make sure you don’t let it get too low, or you’re risking engine failure. Honestly, there’s not a whole lot to do but keep topping it off. At some point, your catalytic converter might get clogged from the burning oil.

Sounds like it could be the rings. I had a similar issue, and that’s why I ended up trading mine in at around 158k miles.

Hyundai has a process that might help, but it’s not cheap. The oil control rings can get clogged with carbon or something like that.

I actually got a notice saying my car was part of a lawsuit, but I missed out on $150 by 8k miles when I traded it. You should check to see if your VIN is covered by any extended warranty.

Like someone else said, keep adding oil, or you’ll be dealing with rod bearing failure next. Before I traded mine in, if I really floored it, I could leave a little smoke trail behind me. It was fine until around 150k miles, then the oil consumption got worse. I probably drove it harder than I should have too.

Try dumping a can of Berryman’s B12 into the oil, then switch to Valvoline Restore and Protect oil. It’s the cheapest option to maybe clean the rings.

You mean the Berryman B12 Chemtool for carburetors, fuel systems, and injectors? Or is there a different product I should look for? That’s what Google is showing me.

Yep, that’s the one. You should be able to grab a can for under $5 at Walmart.

This is just my personal suggestion, not related to my position with Hyundai. It’s what I’d try if I were you.
