Oil consumption test is a joke

I have a 2018 Elantra with 71K miles.

The dealer documented a loss of 2.5 quarts of oil during a 5,000-mile oil change.

For Hyundai to honor the warranty, it needs to lose 1 quart every 1,000 miles.

The engine only holds 4.2 quarts.

So basically, it would have to lose more oil than the engine can hold in 5,000 miles to be covered under warranty.

Unreal…

You do know that losing 1 quart in 1,000 miles is pretty much the industry standard, right?

Industry standard for what?

Oil consumption.

No.

Manufacturers would like to have a word with you.

Volkswagen and Audi: 1 quart of oil every 650 miles.

General Motors: 1 quart of oil every 2,000 miles.

Ford: 1 quart of oil every 1,000 miles.

Subaru: 1 quart of oil every 1,000 to 1,200 miles.

Hyundai and Kia: 1 quart every 1,000 miles.

Toyota: 1 quart every 1,200 miles.

I don’t know about ‘industry standard,’ but none of my cars consume that much oil. All of them are at least 20 years old.

Cool story.

Glad your small sample size is the same as every other vehicle.

Glad your sample size is accepting poor engineering.

@Barbara
Where did I specify it was a Korean problem?

That seems really outdated. This isn’t the '80s anymore when cars started using oil at 90K miles. I’ve seen Toyotas with over 200K miles that don’t use a drop in 5,000 miles.

This engine is known for consuming oil. So I guess I should just keep adding oil and mess up the catalytic converter and O2 sensors too.

@Edward_Genesis
It’s absolutely not outdated at all, especially with the increase in turbocharger use.

You’re full of it. Engines use oil. Yes, some use more than others, but all engines use some oil.

@Barbara
Mine’s not turbocharged. Losing 2.5 quarts in 5,000 miles under 72K miles is abnormal.

It’s not just Korean cars, you know.

I didn’t say it was turbocharged; I was making a general statement that oil consumption increases with turbocharging. Reading comprehension isn’t your strong suit.

I’ve never had a car that consumed any oil between 5,000-mile oil changes.

Apparently, you never check your oil. All cars consume oil. Especially turbo cars, but all cars use some oil.

@Barbara
I check my oil all the time, and none of my cars have ever used any oil between changes. We don’t buy Korean, so that might be the difference.

Maybe some.

I haven’t had a car in the last 40 years that consumed a noticeable amount of oil between changes.

1 quart in 1,000 miles is doable.

Mine uses about 0.4 quarts per 310 miles.

My last oil measurement was 2.1 quarts after 2,500 miles, but I take care of it, do weekly top-ups, and avoid idling.

If you idle a lot, your consumption will be through the roof. Just saying, keep another car handy; you might run out of oil, and your engine could seize. You’ll need transportation.
