The title should be “Guy drives car irresponsibly and damages it, so the company doesn’t cover it.” Who knows how he was actually driving? If Hyundai corporate isn’t paying for a warranty repair based on engine data, their decision likely comes from logic and data, not a knee-jerk reaction. A warranty isn’t a free pass to neglect your car and expect the company to fix it.

Most problems in this sub stem from people neglecting maintenance and driving recklessly.

It’s like saying, ‘Man goes 10,000 km without an oil change and is shocked when the engine fails.’ I’ve seen younger drivers with Hyundai N cars treat them poorly and drive recklessly; it’s not surprising that any company would respond this way.

Is 10k km a lot? Isn’t the standard interval for modern engines about 15k km for an oil change?

10k isn’t much; the recommended interval is usually 7500-10,000 miles (12,000-17,000 km). Sports cars might require changes sooner. Personally, I do it every 6 months or 8,000-10,000 km, depending on how the car runs.
@Yvette
Most N drivers aren’t just commuting at or below speed limits; they want to hear the engine and exhaust.
@Yvette
10,000-15,000 km is recommended for ‘normal’ use, usually 10k for turbo and 15k for non-turbo. Heavy use like track days is 7500 km for non-turbo.

I do my oil changes every 6000 km on my 2020 Elantra; it works for me. I changed my Genesis Coupe’s oil every 4500 km.
@merrickzedeck
6000 is right for most driving conditions. 8000 km is okay if you’re always in perfect conditions, but I wouldn’t recommend going over 10000.

What kind of oil do you use? Seems excessive if you’re using full synthetic.

Oil is cheap. I’d rather change it more often than swap an engine.

6000 was the recommendation for 2020, even on synthetic, for severe conditions. They pushed it to 8000 on newer models.

I have free oil changes for 5 years at the dealer; it’s not on my dime for now.

Once it starts consuming oil, it doesn’t matter how long the oil lasts, and running it low is bad.
@EntourageExpert
Check the oil every other tank; it only takes a few minutes.

Do an oil analysis on your GDI engine and see what your recommended interval is.

10k km is about 6k miles. I prefer to do oil changes at around 5k miles, but 6k is fine.
@merrickzedeck
I’ve seen that with N drivers. Reminds me of the WRX/STI or Type R crowds—most drive aggressively. The 8k oil change intervals for N cars are silly. Most drivers are in the ‘severe’ category and need to change oil sooner.
@Calliope
How does commuting classify as severe conditions? Keeping the car in a garage is ridiculous.
