What’s up guys… I drive a 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe, and recently I’ve noticed that the controls on the left side of the steering wheel (volume, radio, phone buttons, etc.) have stopped working completely. The right-side controls seem fine, but the left ones are unresponsive.
Has anyone experienced this issue before or have any ideas on how to fix it? I’ve tried restarting the car and checked the fuses, but no luck. Would this require a trip to the dealership, or is there a DIY fix I could try before that?
I don’t know why, but I can never remember the controls are on the left. Cruise control just feels right on the left, so I keep speeding up by mistake when I try to change the volume.
Once again, people are making this sound more complicated than it is. As a Hyundai technician, I see this issue a lot. It’s usually the clock spring inside the steering wheel, which is normal wear and tear. The fix should cost you about an hour of labor plus the part. It might even be covered under warranty since many cars have extended warranties for this problem, especially if your airbag light is on. Don’t stress, and don’t let everyone make you worry.
From my experience, if your steering wheel controls aren’t working, it could be the clock spring under the airbag. It’s a cheap fix if you do it yourself. Just make sure to follow instructions carefully and disconnect the battery first…
Went thru the same issue with my ‘16 Santa Fe Sport. Pretty sure it’s the clock spring, but I don’t want to mess with it myself because of the airbag. The dealer quoted me something ridiculous, like $500-$700 to replace it, so I passed on that.
I’m curious what an independent mechanic might charge, though it might still be too expensive to bother.
I had the same issue with my 2016 Santa Fe Sport. It started with the left side controls going out, then the bottom right ones stopped working too. Took it in, and they charged me $700 for the clock spring, plus $180 for the diagnostic since it failed completely.
