Some insurance companies won't cover hyundai cars, is this happening to you

I reached out to five insurance companies, and two of them refused to cover any Hyundai models, saying they are ‘too easy to steal.’ My car has push-button start, so it isn’t affected by the USB theft issue, but that doesn’t seem to matter. It feels like I’m being charged extra just for owning a Hyundai. Has anyone else run into this?

I got a Hyundai in June and had no trouble getting insurance. I think it depends on where you live—some areas are just high risk, and companies don’t want to deal with it.

Yeah, it’s kind of like trying to insure a Hellcat in Atlanta. Insurance companies just look at you like, ‘Are you serious?’

@shlet
Met a guy at the range who drives a Challenger. He had two attempted carjackings in one month.

Haven’t had that problem. What state are you in?

It depends on the area. Some places either won’t insure Hyundais or charge higher rates because of theft risks.

I’ve seen news reports saying certain models are hard to insure, but I haven’t heard of every Hyundai being denied. I just got a 2023 Sonata, and my rate is around $150 a month, which is normal for my area. Where are you seeing insurers rejecting all Hyundai models?

@MegWhitgal
My Hyundai Sonata is basically uninsurable. This has to be a class-action lawsuit waiting to happen. It’s not fair that people who can’t afford luxury cars are getting hit with huge insurance hikes.

@MegWhitgal
It mostly affects models from 2021 and earlier.

No issues here. I actually switched to a new company and my rate went down.

I tried using an independent agent, and he ran into the same problem. He told me some insurance companies don’t even bother checking if a Hyundai has push-button start—they just reject it automatically. I had to stick with State Farm for another year. I’m in Dallas.

Had the same issue, couldn’t get coverage, so I just sold my Hyundai.

Progressive did the same thing to me with my 2017 Elantra, even though it has push-button start. I’m with GEICO now. This is in Vegas.

I’m in Vegas too. State Farm raised my rate to $273 a month for my 2015 Sonata with push-button start. What’s GEICO charging you?

@jordansmith
I pay $70 a month for my 2017 Elantra Limited. Full coverage with a $1,000 deductible for both collision and comprehensive. I also have two other cars and homeowners insurance through Liberty Mutual. Married and good credit.

Haven’t run into this yet. If it happens, my insurance company will be losing coverage on three cars and a house.

I have insurance through Travelers, and they didn’t increase my rate for driving a Hyundai. When my car was stolen, they covered it with no issues.

Interesting. My mother-in-law tried to insure her 2020 Santa Fe with Travelers, and they flat-out refused. She’s in North Carolina.

@StellarisSeeker
Yeah, it seems to depend on the state. I’m in Louisiana, and I had no issues.

No trouble here. I got my 2023 Hyundai insured with GEICO, and my sister has a 2013 Hyundai insured through a local company.
