It just started this morning and only happens when I brake. Anyone know what may be causing this?
Low oil pressure…
DO NOT IGNORE THIS
There are a lot of possible reasons, from most trivial to most expensive.
- faulty oil filter or oil went out of spec - replace filter and oil.
- faulty oil pressure sensor - all is ok, but the sensor panics. New sensor needed.
- clogged oil intake - pump is not getting enough oil to build pressure. Cleaning of intake required.
- failed oil pump - pump is not able to produce pressure. A new pump needed.
- failed crankshaft bushing or crankshaft itself - pressure is built by the pump, but goes away around the crankshaft. A major engine rebuild needed.
Take the car to a shop and have oil and filter replaced immediately. With a bit of luck you’ll be ok and oil pressure warning will not come back. Replacing the sensor is usually easy as well. Cleaning requires the oil pan to be taken off - a bigger job, but nothing major really.
The last two require a bit more maintenance, but I don’t know those engines to tell you how much.
@Lausanne
Good on you for the exquisite information to the OP, this should be pinned to the subreddit honestly since this is a common issue on the older/higher mileage Hyundais.
@Lausanne
Thank you!
@Lausanne
Thank you for this information, as I will be screenshoting in the event I ever need it.
@Lausanne
This. I’ll also add that I once had a bad internal bypass valve, and it caused enough of a dip in oil pressure that it set off the warning light.
@Lausanne
Basically one sure fire way to know: drain oil, if it’s oil you’re good. If it’s glitter oil then RIP to the bottom end at least.
Check your oil.

And put some air in the right rear…

Take it into a shop. It could be a sensor issue or it could be an issue with oil pump or some other problem in the oil system.
@David
Tow it to a shop*
Don’t risk driving it with low oil pressure.

This would also be my suggestion to err on the side of caution.

If it’s due to a clog or failing pump you can turn a $200 repair into $5,000 in a matter of a few miles.
@David
I’ve seen similar errors in Audis and VWs. Engines with turbos are prone to sludging if you don’t change the oil on time, and only with the correct synthetic oil. Dino oil will sludge out when the red hot turbo cooks it. It could be the oil pickup is clogged up with junk or the oil galleys are plugged up with sludge. This is exactly why you should never go to a quick oil change place. They are known for using whatever conventional oil when you pay for synthetic, or using the wrong viscosity oil. Get your car serviced by a shop who knows Hyundai/Kia.
So yeah, have it towed to a shop for them to test your oil pressure. If you’re very lucky, it’s just a bad sensor or bad connector.
@StephieStephie
Yep, I have an Elantra with the 1.4L turbo and that’s one reason I try to religiously change at around 5k-6k miles.
Make sure you get it checked out! This was happening to my 2015 Hyundai Sonata and I just thought it was a faulty sensor since it only happened when I braked and I got regular oil changes. But when I got my oil changed in the summer, they told me that the oil was “bone dry.”
Still, thought it was just a faulty sensor until my check engine light started blinking as I was in the middle of a move to a new city and now my car is in the body shop getting a new engine. Luckily, it’s covered under warranty.
@BillSmith
This is my second engine in this car Hyundai covered none of the replacement since I was the second owner and the car was past the 65k warranty for second owners.

That’s BS! I am also the second owner and had over 98k miles on my car.
@BillSmith
I went through hell for months but Hyundai refused to pay a dime. Kept putting the blame on me even though I had proof of maintenance records. They are the absolute worst!
