Thinking of getting a used Hyundai Santa Fe...which years are best?

I’m planning to buy a used Hyundai Santa Fe, but I’ve heard some years are better than others. I’m mainly looking for something reliable that won’t cost a fortune in repairs. Any suggestions on the best years to go for, or ones I should avoid?

If you’re looking for reliability, the 2001, 2016, and 2018 models are really solid. The 2018 is especially good because it has advanced safety features and not many reported issues. I’ve got the 2016 model, and it’s been smooth so far with no major repairs.

@Brielle
That’s helpful to know. I’ve been leaning towards the 2016 or 2018 models. Have you faced any small issues with your 2016?

Just minor stuff, like some cosmetic wear and a small electrical glitch, but nothing major. Overall, it’s been a great SUV for me.

Avoid the 2017 model. It had a lot of problems with engine stalling and excessive oil consumption. I know someone who had to replace their engine around the 100,000-mile mark, which was really expensive.

Yeah, I’ve heard the same about the 2017. It’s better to stay away from that year. I had a 2012 Santa Fe and the engine failed at around 85,000 miles, so that’s another one to avoid.

I’ve had the 2018 Santa Fe for a couple of years now, and it’s been a reliable ride. Hardly any issues, and the safety features like lane departure warning have been really handy. Plus, it drives really smoothly.

That’s good to hear. I’ve been thinking about getting the 2018 too. Did you find any drawbacks with it, or would you say it’s worth it?

Honestly, no major drawbacks. Maybe just some minor cosmetic stuff, but nothing serious. I’d say it’s worth it if you want something reliable and comfortable.

Just to add, I had the 2007 model and it wasn’t a great experience. The fuel gauge was constantly giving inaccurate readings, and I had some airbag system issues. I’d steer clear of that year.

Yeah, 2007 had a bunch of issues. I think Hyundai really improved in later years, especially after 2012.

For anyone considering the 2018, I’d definitely recommend it. I’ve had mine for a while now and haven’t faced any engine or transmission problems. The ride quality is really smooth too.

Nice. Did you get the standard model or one of the higher trims? I’m curious if the higher trims have any additional issues or not.

@LizCampbell
I went for the higher trim, and so far, it’s been just as reliable. The extra features like the panoramic sunroof are a nice touch too.
