What type of oil does a Hyundai Sonata use?

My 2014 Hyundai Sonata had its engine replaced for free last year, and since then, I’ve driven about 3500 miles. I called the dealer, and they told me they used 5W20 Synthetic Blend oil.

I have two questions:

  1. Should I keep using 5W20 synthetic blend oil? Which brand do you recommend?
  2. How many miles should I go before changing the oil? The service advisor said I could wait until 5000 miles.

Please advise. Thank you in advance.

hi car enthusiasts, synthetic oil typically provides superior performance and protection compared to conventional oil, albeit at a higher cost. your owner’s manual may suggest a specific oil type based on your driving conditions.

Oil Type:

Continuing with 5W20 Synthetic Blend is a reliable choice. Since the dealer used this oil type for the new engine and your car is a 2014 model, it likely aligns with the manufacturer’s specifications. You can always verify this in your owner’s manual for confirmation.

Oil Brand Recommendation:

There isn’t a single “best” brand as several reputable brands offer high-quality synthetic blend oils. Here are some popular options:

  • Castrol GTX® Syntec Blend
  • Mobil 1™ Extended Performance
  • Valvoline® Advanced Full Synthetic Blend
  • Pennzoil Platinum® High Mileage Synthetic Blend

Oil Change Interval:

Based on the information provided, changing your oil every 5,000 miles seems reasonable. Modern synthetic blend oils can often be used for longer intervals, and given your new engine, 5,000 miles is a prudent choice.

Choose a FULL synthetic oil; any well-known brand will do. Obtain the oil weight indicated on the oil filler cap of your vehicle. It appears to be 5W-30 for you. Every 5000 miles OR every six months, change the oil and filter (Hyundai filter and drain plug gasket)! Every time you fill up your gas tank, check your oil level to determine whether you’re using any!
