Why is Hyundai paint so bad… anyone else?

Is it just me or does the paint on these cars seem terrible? I’ve had more rock chips on this one than any other car I’ve owned. Even a low-powered pressure washer feels risky. Anyone else having the same problem?

I saw a video of someone reviewing their Hyundai after 2 years and 30,000 miles, and they mentioned the paint being water-based. Not sure if that’s the case, but I know ceramic coating helps with the pressure washer, and PPF is great for rock chips.

Hyundai and Kia used to be known for having good paint and bad engines. Now it feels like it’s the opposite, better engines but bad paint.

@Mason
Yeah, pretty much all cars have water-based paint since around 2005 because of the laws. Hyundai paint just seems softer and more prone to swirls and chips compared to others I’ve owned.

Good to know, guess it’s just a thing we have to deal with now. :joy:

After just 1 year, my car had over 20 chips on the hood… it’s ridiculous.

Yeah, the paint is really thin. My wife’s car has big chips too. It’s just tough to keep these cars looking good.

I’ve got rock chips and even rail dust. Worst paint I’ve ever seen.

I haven’t had any problems with mine yet, but I got lucky and had full PPF applied when I bought it.

Wow, full PPF or just the front? Either way, you scored big on that deal!

Same here. I still use a pressure washer, but I agree the paint is thin. It seems like modern cars in general have worse paint quality now.

My car’s had PPF since day one. I’ve got it from the doors forward but thinking about doing the roof as well. The sun’s gonna be tough on it.

I got PPF on the front and rocker panels right after I bought the car because of all the bad things I heard about the paint. You can even see metal through the paint on my passenger door sill. It’s bad.

It’s not just Hyundai. Most budget brands are using cheap, brittle paint now. It used to be more flexible, but now it just chips easily.

Mazda, here we go again…

I did PPF on the hood and full front when I bought mine. Also got it ceramic coated. It still looks great, except for some of the trim pieces.

Just like their engines, absolute trash.

First of all, that’s not true anymore. Secondly, why are you even on this forum? :joy:

You’re always lurking in these threads just to stir things up. Give it a rest, man.
