Hyundai won't give me a buyback… what should I do?

@Gordon
Most of the time, dealers offer loaners if a repair takes more than a day. My small dealer has 12 loaners available.

If they don’t have a loaner, Hyundai covers a rental once the repair is approved and parts are ordered until 5 days after the parts arrive.

@Rowland
Good to know! I hope I never need to use that info, though.

@Rowland
The catch is that it only starts when the repair is approved. What about the time they spend diagnosing the issue? That doesn’t count?

Yeah, that’s frustrating, but it’s not unique to Hyundai. Dealers often don’t have enough loaners to cover every customer. We run about 50 appointments a day with only 20 loaners. Car repairs are always inconvenient, and we do our best to help, but there’s only so much we can do.

@Rowland
Ford lets dealers add as many cars to their loaner fleet as they want. One of our stores has 150 loaners, and most are out at any given time. If we run out, we’ll just add a new car to the fleet for long-term repairs.

My 2022 Santa Fe has been in the shop for 2 weeks now, and they can’t figure out the powertrain issue. This dealership in Jacksonville, FL doesn’t offer loaners, and Hyundai won’t authorize a rental until they determine it’s a warranty issue, which is ridiculous because I’ve only had the car for 13 months.

@Austin
That’s rough. If they don’t have loaners, you’re out of luck until they figure it out. It’s a frustrating setup, but I just fix the cars, I don’t make the rules.

@Austin
I had to sue the dealership for taking forever to fix my car after they destroyed the engine during repairs. They kept dodging the rental question until my lawyer got involved. Suddenly, a rental appeared. Do with that info what you will.

Most Hyundai dealerships will give you a loaner if the repair won’t be finished the same day.

@Gordon
Not my experience. My Tucson has been in for 5 times now, and every visit was over 4 days long. I’ve never gotten a loaner here in Central FL.

Yeah, that’s supposed to be how Hyundai Canada operates, but some dealers try to play dumb.

You bought a used car, and Hyundai is fixing it. What more do you expect?

OP’s car is still covered by the 5-year/60k mile warranty, so Hyundai is liable to fix it.

Both Hyundai and Land Rover have shipped out bad engines for years. They need to be held accountable for putting defective cars on the road. My advice is to always go into repairs with low expectations because they’ll take forever and you’ll probably end up fixing it yourself if you want it done right.

I think you’re asking too much. If they’re attempting to fix it, that’s all they’re required to do. Most brands don’t offer loaners for service unless they’re luxury brands. If my washing machine breaks, Whirlpool doesn’t owe me free laundry service while I wait for the repair. Let them fix the car.

@jazirah
My Elantra has had six issues, and they gave me a loaner while they worked on it, so it’s not just luxury brands.

True, every dealer is different, but it’s much more common with luxury brands. Lexus and BMW will even pick up your car from your house for repairs and leave a loaner.

@jazirah
They’ve had his car since September 16th, with no end in sight. Would you be okay waiting six months for a repair on your washing machine?

He bought it on September 16th, but it broke down on January 4th.

@jazirah
That’s completely wrong.
