My 2024 Sonata Was Stolen

I leased a new 2024 Hyundai Sonata two months ago, and last night it was stolen from my driveway. I had the keys inside with me.

How is this even possible? Has anyone been through this? I think my insurance will take care of the lease, but I’m worried about getting messed up somehow

It’s possible they hacked the keyfob’s signal and used it to steal your car. That’s the only way since it has an immobilizer. Unless it was towed.

That seems likely. The cop mentioned it wasn’t on any tow records. He said there are teens in the area who steal cars just to joyride or race, then dump them. I can’t believe that’s true.

@JakeHyundaiJourney
If your car has keyless ignition, then it wasn’t taken by those teens the cop mentioned. Your Sonata was stolen by someone more skilled. I’m really sorry.

@JakeHyundaiJourney
People who can clone the signal aren’t just out for joyrides. Your car is probably already on a boat headed somewhere.

Oh no. The last location it showed was on the water near Palm Beach. I thought that was just a GPS mistake…

@JakeHyundaiJourney
Hope you have gap insurance

Where could they possibly take it? I’m just shocked by all of this.

@JakeHyundaiJourney
It’s probably already on its way to Africa.

Relay attack. I’ve been warning about this for a while, but I keep getting downvoted. I was hoping the FOBs would go into sleep mode. I wonder if the key fob was on the counter or in someone’s pocket.

For anyone getting Faraday bags or pouches, it’s important to test them out once you get them and not just trust reviews.

@Terryann
It was left motionless on the counter, so I guess it just never sleeps. Thanks for the heads up.

I’m really sorry to hear this. My 2020 Elantra was stolen two months ago. I got a different model now and I use a Faraday box and a steering lock.

Insurance should cover the value unless you have gap insurance, which would help with depreciation. Best to check with them.

That is, assuming you have comprehensive coverage. I don’t have one.

Gap insurance is included in a lease automatically.

I wonder if your key was close enough to the car to start it up.

Nope. If your key is just two feet from the door, the car won’t start. The sensors are pretty accurate.

@CleinCaster
People can clone your fob from 40 feet away though.

Yes, but that’s not what I meant. The car can tell if the key is actually inside or really close.

What he means is if the key is near enough, it can be cloned and the signal can be activated. If it’s over 49 feet away, they can’t do that because the relay works only within 2 feet of the car.
